forte do leme is beautiful

Leme never ceases to amaze!

Mike Yamazaki, Japan/Poland Visiting Forte do Leme never ceases to amaze us. The short hike up Leme Hill is just the right mix of exercise and fun, with a shady path and peeks of the ocean along the way. When you reach the top, the views are simply incredible—Copacabana Beach, Sugarloaf Mountain, and the Christ the Redeemer there before you. It’s such a cool spot, and the feeling of getting to the top never gets old. Every trip up there leaves you amazed and wanting to come back for more. Visiting a fascinating museum

A Journey through Porto Maravilha

SUPER RECOMENDABLE Guadalupe Garcia, Spain Yesterday, our journey was to Porto Maravilha! It wasn’t too hot or too cold, so the day was perfect for a walk around the port area in Rio. We visited the Mural das Etnias, which was this beautiful enormous wall painted for the Olympics to represent different cultures. We also got to try some street churros (the best in my opinion) and popcorn. The museum was the star of the show; it really informed us about how our actions impact our future on the planet. A toast to visiting Rio

Elizabetta Rodio, Italy A toast to visiting Rio: Raise your glasses to the vibrant streets and rich history of Rio de Janeiro! This Wednesday, we ventured beyond Rio’s beaches and into its historic heart. What a revelation! The city’s architecture blew us away—each building a testament to its rich past. Why do Brazilians Shower so much? Brazilian Hygiene

Why do Brazilians shower so much?

Did you know that in Brazil people are very serious about personal hygiene? Do you know that Brazil is the most hygienic country in the world? Yes, we take many showers per day! In today’s Dica we will talk about some of the Brazilian hygiene routines and also some tips on how you can smell as good as a proper Brazilian. We’ll look into why cleanliness is so crucial to us and how our culture, climate, and social aspects shape our hygiene. While also learning the vocabulary for personal hygiene in Portuguese. Cultural Importance of Hygiene in Brazil Hygiene is key in Brazil and an important part of our culture. It’s not just about keeping clean. It’s about being healthy, feeling good, and connecting with others. This reflects our cultural values and traditions. Hygiene as an Expression of Identity In Brazil, our hygiene habits show who we are. We care a lot about how we look. Our efforts to appear neat and clean are obvious. This is how we show we value ourselves and respect others. Education and Hygiene Practices Education helps a lot in Brazil when it comes to hygiene. From a young age, kids learn why cleanliness is important. This happens both at school and at home. Public awareness campaigns also help keep hygiene values strong and pass them on to new generations. The Significance of Cleanliness in Social Interactions Being clean matters a lot in how we connect with others. People expect you to be neat and tidy in any social or work setting. Showing good hygiene shows respect and a desire for meaningful relationships. Cultural Aspects Shaping Hygiene Practices in Brazil Cultural Aspect Impact on Hygiene Practices Identity and Self-Expression Shows uniqueness, self-care, and being proud Festivals and Rituals Highlights cleanliness and cultural significance Social Interactions Reveals respect, thinking of others, and building ties Education and Awareness Starts promoting cleanliness early in life Environmental Factors Influencing Shower Frequency Brazil’s tropical climate shapes how often people shower. The high humidity and warm weather all year round encourage Brazilians to keep clean. This is key to understanding their shower habits. 1. Humidity: A Prominent Factor The humid weather in Brazil makes sweating common. This sweat mixes with the moisture in the air, making people feel sticky. This can lead to the need for more showers. Also, warm and humid conditions are perfect for bacteria to grow. Thus, taking multiple showers ensures good hygiene. 2. Heat and Sweat In hot conditions, people sweat more. Sweat helps cool the body but can also cause bad smells. To feel fresh and confident, Brazilians shower often to wash away sweat and keep clean. 3. Bathers’ Paradise: Beaches and Pools Brazil is known for its beautiful beaches and pools. When people swim or relax by the water, they typically take a shower afterward. This removes sand, chlorine, or saltwater, keeping them clean. To sum up, Brazil’s warm and humid climate affects how often people shower. These conditions push Brazilians to shower frequently to stay fresh, fight against sweat, and keep clean after being in the water. Social Factors Contributing to Frequent Showering In Brazil, how you look and keep yourself clean matters a lot. People in Brazil really care about being clean. This makes many of them take a lot of showers. There are several reasons behind this trend. Societal Norms Brazil has a strong culture of being neat and tidy. Everyone is expected to look well-groomed and fresh. This includes being clean not just on your body but in your environment too. Beauty Standards Beauty is a big deal in Brazil. This leads to people following meticulous grooming routines, such as taking showers often. Looking clean and attractive is important because Brazil values beauty highly. Social Interactions Connecting with others is very important in Brazil. Being clean is a way to show you care and respect others. It helps in making good social relationships. These points show how Brazil’s love for cleanliness leads to more showering. Now, let’s dive deeper into the daily hygiene practices of Brazilians. Cultural Factors Environmental Factors Social Factors Strong emphasis on personal grooming Tropical climate and high humidity Societal norms and beauty standards Beauty-conscious culture Warm temperatures Social interactions and relationships Importance of cleanliness in appearance Our Day by Day as Brazilians and Cariocas This habit of taking a shower every day is something of a cultural nature that we have inherited from the Brazilian indigenous groups. Due to the crazy hot weather here, it feels impossible not to shower at least once a day. Most Brazilians shower 2-3 times a day during the summer. But even on chilly days of 20°C/68°F (Cariocas would say it’s cold) we shower once or twice a day. It’s usually one in the morning before leaving the house and another at night before bed.  And also before leaving the house, it is absolutely necessary to use deodorant! To make sure you keep the good smell for a longer period of time. We care so much about deodorant that during carnival this year a couple was selling singular sprays of deodorant in the middle of a bloquinho (carnival street party). Let me be more specific, people had to pay 1 real for each time they sprayed on their armpits. Seems insane right? You might think that if you’ve never been to a carnival in Brazil. But if you experience the summer here and street parties under direct sunlight, you’ll understand our concern about smelling bad. Clean your Teeth after Every Meal!! Dentists say it always, but do you do it? Brazilians, we DO that!! We brush our teeth at least 3 times a day. Here people brush their teeth after lunch, so it’s common that if you go to public restrooms, you’ll see people around the sinks brushing their teeth.  In your country do you brush your teeth after lunch?  Here we brush our teeth at work after lunch, it is very normal to see colleagues asking to borrow toothpaste. Here you can

Food tells a story

I had the pleasure of attending a cooking class with Simone, where we prepared an array of delicious Brazilian dishes, including queijo coalho, caipirinhas, moqueca, and brigadeiro. Throughout the class, Simone shared fascinating insights into Brazilian history and how the country’s cuisine has evolved over time. The experience was truly amazing, offering the perfect blend of fun and learning. Not only did I learn how to cook traditional Brazilian food, but I also gained a deeper understanding of its cultural significance. I would highly recommend attending another event with Simone – it was an unforgettable experience! Ryan Baysinger In this class with Chef Simone, we learned that food tells a story. She shared with us the origins of Brazilian cuisine and its roots, spanning Indigenous, African, and Portuguese influences. Afterward, we had the opportunity to make a delicious and refreshing Maracujá (Passion Fruit) and Limão (Lime) caipirinha. Of course, we also learned how to prepare Brazilian appetizers such as Grilled Cheese with the Chef’s special Spicy Guava Sauce (Queijo coalho com molho de goiabada apimentada) and Italian Sausage with a vinaigrette sauce. The main course (and the one we were most excited about) was the traditional Moqueca! And to top it all off, she taught us how to make the famous brigadeiro! It was the easiest to make and definitely a great finish for those of us with a sweet tooth. Learning Capoeira

Fun rythm of Capoeira

Lizet Hernandez, Colombia We ventured into a Capoeira class alongside our students, eager to delve into the intricacies of this fusion of martial arts and dance, all while honing our Portuguese skills. What made the experience even more enriching was the fact that one of our students was already acquainted with the Capoeira school, which happens to be in partnership with Rio & Learn. This familiarity allowed him to seamlessly integrate Portuguese practice into an environment he’s already comfortable with, fostering a deeper connection to both language and culture. practicing forro

Rhythm, Passion, and Connection!

At its essence, Forró is a dance of passion and connection of people guided by an energetic rhythm. We were fortunate to have our class with Castrinho, a seasoned instructor who has been leading dance classes with Rio & Learn for quite some time now. Every time he steps into the studio, he brings an infectious energy and a sense of humor that instantly captivates his students. Our teacher effortlessly demonstrated the simplicity of Forró, breaking down its basic steps with clarity and enthusiasm. With a twinkle in his eye, he reassured us that anyone can master the fundamentals of this beloved Brazilian dance style. Yet, he didn’t shy away from the more intricate aspects of Forró, such as the delicate art of guiding one’s partner through the dance. Blooms and Beyond

After a few days of rain here in Rio de Janeiro, we were blessed with a beautiful day which we took full advantage of by visiting Jardim Botanical. It was such a pleasure getting lost amongst the the flowers and trees. We managed to visit many of the main attractions, however you could truly spend a full day here. It was great to learn the names of the plants and flowers in Portuguese and also practice our navigation skills in Portuguese. A great afternoon with a great group! Ross Garwood, England It was an absolutely stunning sunny afternoon spent exploring the botanical garden. Equipped with mosquito repellent to fend off those pesky bugs, we embarked on our journey through the lush greenery. Thankfully, one of our students had a knack for navigating maps, and helped leading us to all the must-see spots. We made a pit stop at the fountain, tossing in coins and making wishes, fingers crossed for some good luck. As we strolled, we engaged in lively conversation in Portuguese, soaking in the atmosphere and culture. We stayed until the garden closed its gates, unwilling to tear ourselves away from the beauty that surrounded us. And just before we left, we were treated to a breathtaking sight: the sun setting, casting a golden glow through the trees. Rhythm of Brazil: Exploring the Soul of Samba

Do you have what it takes to keep up with a Sambista?! During our samba class we were introduced to the rudimentary elements of the iconic Brasilian dance. The steps are simple but it’s not as easy as it seems! Core strength and fast feet are needed, not to mention coordinating your arms at the same time. Now throw some samba music into the mix and you’re ready! Our teacher guided us through some of the fundamental moves that we see during Carnaval and we quickly worked up a sweat. However I think we might need a little more practice… Rebecca Martland, England Samba transcends mere dance; it embodies a profound cultural identity, resilience, vigor, originality, and ancestral connections. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to impart not just the steps, but the rich energy and timeless wisdom of our heritage to our students. Through samba, we celebrate not only rhythm and movement, but the essence of Brazil’s vibrant spirit and enduring legacy. See more of this activity on the video below.
