Difference between Bom and Bem in Portuguese

The word Bom is an adjective, therefore it serves to give a characteristic to a substantive, while the word Bem is an adverb, which serves to give a characteristic to a verb. Besides that, the adjective Bom varies in masculine, feminine, singular and plural, while the word Bem, for being an adverb, does not change it’s form.

Examples with the adjective Bom

Ele é um homem bom.
He is a good man.

Esta música é muito boa.
This is a good song.

Os bares no Rio de Janeiro são bons.
The bars in Rio de Janeiro are good.

Elas são boas estudantes.
They are good students.

Este suco de laranja está muito bom!
This orange juice is very good!

Examples with the adverb Bem

Ele fala português muito bem.
He speaks Portuguese very well.

Elis Regina era uma grande cantora. Ela cantava muito bem.
Elis Regina was a great singer. She sang really well.

Eu estou bem, obrigada!
I am well, thank you!

Nossos amigos são italianos, mas falam português muito bem.
Our friends are Italian, but speak Portuguese really well.

O professor Diogo não dança samba bem. Ele é café com leite.
The teacher Diogo does not dance samba really well. He is café com leite (inexperienced).

Difference between Tudo bem and Tudo bom

There is no difference between Tudo bem! and Tudo bom! in Portuguese.

Both expressions have the same idea. It varies from one person to another if they are going to use Tudo bem! or Tudo bom!
