Get ready for a relaxing day surrounded by nature, history, and some of the most beautiful landscapes in Rio de Janeiro! In this RioLIVE! activity, we’ll visit the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden (Jardim Botânico), one of the city’s most important green spaces and a perfect place to discover Brazil’s incredible biodiversity. Located in Rio’s South Zone, the Botanical Garden combines nature, science, and history in the heart of the city. Founded in 1808 by King João VI, it was originally created to introduce and cultivate plants and spices brought from other parts of the world. Over the years, it became an important center for botanical research and environmental conservation.
Today, the garden is home to thousands of plant species from Brazil and around the world. As we walk along its beautiful paths, we’ll discover tropical trees, exotic plants, lakes, gardens, greenhouses, and some of the most iconic scenery in Rio.
Nature, Brazilian history and Biodiversity

One of the most famous sights in the Botanical Garden is the impressive Avenue of Royal Palms, with its enormous palm trees creating one of the most recognizable landscapes in the park. But there is much more to discover!
During our visit, we’ll explore different areas of the garden and learn about Brazilian plants, tropical ecosystems, biodiversity, and environmental conservation. We’ll also see beautiful orchids, bromeliads, giant trees, aquatic plants, and many other species while learning interesting facts about their origins and characteristics.
The Botanical Garden is also connected to an important period in Brazilian history. While exploring the park, we’ll discover why it was created, how plants from different parts of the world arrived in Brazil, and how the garden eventually became an important scientific institution.
And keep your eyes open! 👀 The Botanical Garden is not only home to plants. Different animals live freely in the area, and we might spot monkeys, toucans, birds, lizards, and other wildlife during our walk.
Of course, we’ll also use this experience to practice Portuguese! We’ll talk about nature, animals, Brazilian history, the environment, and everything we discover along the way.
Why visit the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden?

Because Rio de Janeiro is much more than beaches, samba, and Carnival! The city is surrounded by extraordinary nature, and the Botanical Garden is one of the best places to understand the relationship between Rio, the Atlantic Forest, Brazilian biodiversity, and history. Walking through the garden gives you the chance to slow down and experience another side of the city. Surrounded by enormous trees, tropical plants, lakes, birds, and the mountains of Rio in the background, it can be hard to believe you’re still inside one of Brazil’s largest cities.
It’s also the perfect environment to learn Portuguese naturally. Instead of studying vocabulary only in the classroom, you’ll be able to use the language while observing plants and animals, asking questions, sharing opinions, and learning about Brazil.
This RioLIVE! activity is perfect for anyone who wants to practice Portuguese outside the classroom, enjoy nature, discover Brazilian biodiversity, learn about Rio’s history, and spend a relaxing day with classmates.
So put on your comfortable shoes, bring your curiosity, and get ready to explore one of the greenest and most beautiful places in Rio!
