Main Emergency Numbers in Brazil

For these emergency numbers there is no specific way to call or codes you have to use. You just need to type the three numbers and dial! It’s just like the 911, but in Brazil!

  • Military Police (Polícia Militar): 190
    • Primary hotline for reporting emergencies. If you need help but are not sure which number you can call, 190 is the number to dial.
  • Public Hospital Ambulance (SAMU): 192
    • Hotline for a completely free public ambulance for emergency care. Remember to help first responders by listing: what happened to the patient; the address; and, if known, patient information.
  • Fire Department (Corpo de Bombeiros): 193
    • In Brazil, you can call the Fire Department in case of fire, accidents with animals, gas leaks, accidents with chemical products, and natural disasters such as floods and fires.
  • Humans Rights (Direitos Humanos): 100
    • This hotline (provided by the Presidency of the Republic) receives all kinds of complaints related to human rights violations, especially those that affect vulnerable groups of people (such as children, the elderly, people with disabilities, LGBTQIA+, the homeless and issues related to airlines).
  • Women’s Services (Defesa à Mulher): 180
    • This toll-free hotline receives reports of violence against women, to advise them on their rights and current legislation, and to refer them to local services if necessary.
  • Anonymous Reports (Disque Denúncia): 181
    • Free hotline to report crimes and assaults if you wish to remain anonymous. Often used to help locate fugitive criminals when the whistleblower is afraid to go to the authorities.
  • Civil Defense (Defesa Civil): 199
    • This hotline is mainly used during natural disasters, if you need to contact specialists and emergency workers.

Remember, these emergency numbers provide completely free services for anyone in Brazil, even if you are not Brazilian.

I’ve just started online classes with Prof. Ana Carolina & she is the absolute best! It’s my first time learning Portuguese and I was speaking full sentences in the first class. Obrigada!

Small classes, diverse accents, and engaging professors make Rio & Learn Online a fantastic choice! I've been thrilled with my experience at Rio & Learn Online so far. The small class sizes (around 1-3 others students) allow for personalized attention and plenty of opportunities to practice speaking. What's more, having different professors throughout the program exposes you to various accents, preparing you for real-world interactions. I opted for the full-time program, which involves 2 hours of daily learning from Monday to Friday. After just over 12 weeks, I can confidently say my Portuguese has improved dramatically. The professors are incredibly engaging and encourage students to utilize real-life examples, solidifying the learning process. While I'm only halfway through the program, I'm confident in recommending Rio & Learn Online to anyone seeking to learn Portuguese in a supportive and effective environment. I've gone from being a complete beginner (only knowing hi and bye) to holding conversations - and I'm excited to see how much further I can progress! I'll be back with another review after completing the program, but for now: Rio & Learn Online - highly recommended!

I've been taking the group online courses with Rio&Learn for 2 months. They offer a fantastic way to learn Portuguese and get speaking practice if you don't live in Brazil. The teachers are engaging and are able to adjust their level of Portuguese to whatever level you are at. Obrigado!
