Conditional in Portuguese

Condicional em português. Se ele pudessem, ficariam mais tempo estudando português na Rio & Learn.

Salve, everyone! On our Dica today, we’ll learn how to use sentences using conditional in Portuguese.

Portuguese Conditional

The use of conditional implies condition. Doing something unless some other event prevents us or not doing something in result of some consequence. The structure of the conditional sentences in Portuguese is as follows:

Formation of Conditional Sentences in Portuguese

Conditional in Portuguese. Formation of Conditional Sentences in Portuguese: To create a sentence using the conditional we need the imperfect of the subjunctive and the future conditional. Example of conditional sentence in Portuguese: Se fizesse sol, eu iria à praia.

It’s also possible to invert the structure using the futuro do pretérito (future conditional) before the imperfect of the subjunctive, and the meaning will continue being the same. Let’s take a look at this using the example from the image above:

Se fizesse sol, eu iria à praia.
If it was sunny, I would go to the beach.

Eu iria à praia, se fizesse sol.
I would go to the beach, if it was sunny.

Because we use the past in this kind of phrase, but the action itself didn’t happen in reality, we can say it’s an unreal past.

Let’s take a look at some examples:

Examples of conditional sentences in Portuguese

Se eu tivesse tempo, visitaria meus amigos no fim de semana.
If I had time, I would visit my friends this weekend.

Se você pudesse estudar português, estudaria online?
If you could study portuguese, would you study online?

O que você faria se ganhasse na loteria?
What would you do if you won the lottery?

Se você trouxesse as bebidas, faríamos uma caipirinha.
If you brought the drinks, we would prepare a caipirinha.

Eu nunca contaria seu segredo para ninguém, se você confiasse em mim.
I would never tell your secret to anyone, if you trusted me.

Nós não iríamos para a praia nem se estivesse sol.
We wouldn’t go to the beach even if it were sunny.

O que ele faria se nunca envelhecesse?
What would he do if he never grew old?

Diving Deeper…

Most of the time, we use the word “se” (if) to connect the sentences and give the idea of the condition we are looking to imply. In other cases, we can use conditional subordinate conjunctions and phrases: aliás (moreover), a não ser que (unless), salvo se (unless), contanto que (provided that), sem que (without which), desde que (provided that), a menos que (unless), quando (when). If you want to take a look at the subjunctive conjunctions, just click here.

In this case, we might not need to actually use the verbs in the futuro do pretérito (future conditional) and the imperfect of the subjunctive. This is not as common as using “se” (if) though.

Eu não iria para a Europa, salvo se não fosse tão frio.
I wouldn’t go to Europe, unless it wasn’t so cold.

Eu não faria isso, a não ser que você tenha autoridade.
I wouldn’t do that, unless you have the authority.

Vocês conseguiriam melhores lugares, contato que chegassem cedo.
You would get better seats, provided that you arrive early.

We just learned the structure and use of conditional sentences in Portuguese. Let’s practice a bit?

Now it’s your turn

See the situations and complete the sentences using the conditional in Portuguese.

  1. Eu _________ (viajar) para a Europa se eu __________ (ter) dinheiro suficiente.

Had an incident with a holiday. I selected Monday and Wednesday for my classes, since I can’t attend classes on other days. Due to holiday one of the lessons was scheduled on Friday. I warned about this issue on Tuesday, 3 days before the lesson, but manager answered in a rude way that they can’t do anything and blamed me that this is my fault I didn’t warn earlier. Teacher is asking their students to give good grades to the course on a second lesson. This is not teachers fault. Probably managers ask her to do this. Maybe my grade will change. Only time will show. At the moment as is.

I joined the online classes 1 month ago and I am loving the experience. Shout-out to Professora's Dani & Nathalia, they're amazing! The classes are interesting, focused and the teachers are very patient. They also do extra online activities outside the class schedule to really boost your learning in a fun, engaging environment. My speaking proficiency is improving faster than ever before compared to other classes I tried with other schools. The staff are very organised, communicate well and I think the cost is excellant value for money. Vamos lá!

Followed one week of group classes in Rio de Janeiro, I had no prior experience with Portuguese. The classes were really good, fun even (we laughed a lot) and the material is very well chosen. The after activities (Rio Live) as well were so fun and the teachers (Diogo) always made you feel comfortable and had a lot of patience. We even went for lunch together to learn about this subject. I really loved this way of teaching. I feel like I have a good base of the language and I can understand so much more now.

I have taken online courses twice now with Rio & Learn. In both group and private lessons the instruction was excellent. Classes were well-planned and the instructors were responsive and engaging. If I ever have the chance I will definitely sign up for their in person classes.

This is the best language school ever. I spent one month, started with no portguese whatsoever, and now I can hold basic conversations and understand most of what people are saying. My progress was pretty amazing thanks to all the teachers who are AMAZING. I can't stress enough how nice, helpful and fun they are. In addition to classes in the mornings, the school offers different kinds of activities every afternoon outside the school. It's great to practice portuguese outside and also discover some great places in Rio as well as many different kind of fun activities. I made great friends there and had so many good laughs. Often the teachers also take you out of the classroom for the entire class or half of it to make it more entertaining. I truly recommend this school that was way more than a school for me. Thanks to everyone there, especially Diogo, Lais and Guliana for everything.
