Meet the Curupira, a legendary figure from Brazilian folklore who defends nature like a true eco-warrior, with a twist. Literally! His feet are backward.
That’s right. One of the most iconic elements of the Curupira legend is that he has red hair and feet that face the wrong way. This makes it nearly impossible for hunters or loggers to track him, as he leaves footprints that lead in the opposite direction.
The Curupira is a mythical creature from Brazilian folklore whose main mission is to protect the forest and its animals. He punishes those who exploit nature unfairly, like illegal hunters or people who chop down trees unnecessarily. According to folklore, he can confuse these intruders by creating mirages, distorting their sense of direction, or leading them in circles until they’re hopelessly lost. Think of him as the forest’s personal bodyguard, using tricks and supernatural powers to defend his home. And trust us, you don’t want to get on his bad side.
According to legend, the Curupira can make people lose their way in the woods, create illusions, and even teleport. He’s been around since indigenous traditions, long before colonial times, and is still a beloved figure in Brazilian storytelling today.

In different parts of Brazil, people describe the Curupira slightly differently. For instance, in the Amazon region, he’s often said to ride a wild boar and leave behind glowing footprints. Meanwhile, in the Southeast, particularly around Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, stories focus on his high-pitched whistle that can hypnotize or disorient intruders. But all versions agree: he protects the forest fiercely and mysteriously.
The Curupira might also remind you of other mythological guardians. Think of Pan from Greek mythology or the Leshy from Slavic folklore. These figures all connect humanity with the wild, reminding us to tread lightly and respectfully.
