How to use the verb Estar in Portuguese

So as you have already seen above, we can use the verb estar in Portuguese to talk about temperatures, temporary characteristics and locations. So we’re going to look at these one by one.


The verb estar is used to talk about temperatures. If somewhere is hot or cold or also to talk about the weather, for example:

Em Bangu está muito quente.
Is very hot in Bangu.

O clima está nublado, não vou à praia.
It’s cloudy, I won’t go to the beach.

O clima está ótimo pra ficar em casa e ver um filme.
The weather is great to stay at home and watch a movie. 

Temporary Characteristics

Also, the verb estar in Portuguese is perfect to talk about temporary characteristics. We can use it to talk about feelings and emotions or other temporary characteristics too. If someone is sad, happy, hungry, mad, sleepy…

Monique está muito cansada hoje.
Monique is very tired today.

Eu estou muito animada, vou encontrar minhas amigas.
I’m very excited, I’m going to meet my friends.

Ele está irritado com o chefe.
He is angry with his boss. 


We use it to talk about locations, that is, where something or someone is. This location can be stationary or moveable. For example:

Eu estou no Rio de Janeiro.
I‘m in Rio de Janeiro.

Minha irmã está no Canadá.
My sister is in Canadá.

Danilo está na escola e sua noiva está em casa.
Danilo is in the school and his fiance is at home.

C'est vraiment fantastique...RioAndLearn. Les cours de portugais...ça vaut vraiment la peine. Les cours ont lieu du lundi au vendredi, (de 9h à 13h) et en après midi, ce sont des activités libres en groupe. (Soccer de plage, volleyball , excursions, visites des lieux touristiques, etc) Vendredi soir, on est allé à Lapa, un quartier nocturne de Rio. C'est quelque chose à voir! Des rues bondées de monde, des orchestres, des discothèques...Allô les décibels! L'apprentissage du portugais se fait en immersion, aussi bien en salle de classe que dans les activités extérieures organisées par Rio&Learn.
