Who is Iemanjá?
Every year, on December 31st, Brazilians dress in white and throw flowers into the sea for Iemanjá.
But who is Iemanjá? A saint? Some kind of goddess?
Which religion does she represent? And why has this become a part of Brazilian tradition?
To answer these and many other questions, let’s chat with the ogã (ritual drummer) Rafael Ribeiro.
He’ll explain how Iemanjá can connect Brazil to the African continent, even though she is honored by two different religions.
