Feira de São Cristóvão or Centro Luiz Gonzaga de Tradições Nordestinas (Luiz Gonzaga Northeastern Traditions Center) is located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, in the North Zone (Zona Norte). It was created in honor of Luiz Gonzaga, the King of Baiao. It is a fair that promotes Northeastern culture and products. The Northeast of Brazil is a huge part of the country with a lot of different traditions, cultures, and places. That means this fair an amazing place to experience a lot of Brazilian life that foreigners are not used to.
At the fair, we will find Northestearn traditional dresses, dishes, foods, fruits, gifts, handmade products, and music. We will see many people dancing forró; it’s a very popular and traditional dance in the Northeast of Brazil. So, if you want you can try dancing too!!If you are hungry and would like to experience some local food, you can have a typical Northeastern dinner with us and have a great time studying Portuguese.
Your eyes won’t be able to catch everything there is so much! 😉
Feira de São Cristóvão’s history
During the XX century, many people from Nordeste came to Rio de Janeiro looking for work opportunities. They would go to Campo de São Cristóvão to work in construction. That’s why they settled there. These meetings had typical music and food from Nordeste. With time, these meetings became an event and the fair started to happen around Campo de São Cristóvão in the open air. In 2003, this incredible fair gained a place of its own inside the pavilion. The pavilion was refurbished by Rio’s City Hall and transformed into the Luiz Gonzaga Northeastern Traditions Center as we know it today.
