Right! So maybeΒ Eu gostar vocΓͺ? Nope. If only it were as easy as learning Portuguese for free! So let’s check it out!
ConjugatingΒ Gostar
Thankfully for us,Β gostar is a regular verb ending in -ar. This means that we don’t need to memorize any crazy verb conjugations β all we need to do is change the very end of gostar to the suffix of regular AR verbs. So conjugating gostar in Portuguese looks just like this:
Very simple, right? Or is it really? Is that all we need to know in order to use “to like” in Portuguese? Not quite!
How to Use “gostar de” in Portuguese
The last piece of the puzzle is finally upon us. And here’s the missing secret ingredient:Β de. That’s right. In Portuguese, weΒ always sayΒ gostar de. There are no ifs or buts β we need it! So if you want to show appreciation for your teacher, now you know how it goes:
– Eu gosto de vocΓͺ.
– I like you.
Gostar + Verb
You can use the same format to say you enjoy doing any particular activity β just remember to use the infinitive form of the verb you are talking about!
– VocΓͺs gostam de jogar vΓ΄lei?
– Do you guys like to play voleyball?
– Minha mΓ£e gosta de comer bolo.
– My mother likes to eat cake.
Gostar + the + Noun
But pay attention! In Brazil we love to use contractions with the preposition de. You have to keep that in mind whenever you want to talk about liking a specific person or object. Check it out:
