A Name that Sticks: From Rats to Royalty

Before its transformation into the dazzling “Fiscal Island” (Ilha Fiscal in Portuguese), this tiny patch of land was known as Ilha dos Ratos (“Rats’ Island”). Not exactly inviting, right? But everything changed when the Imperial Navy built the neo-Gothic Ilha Fiscal Palace in 1889, giving the island a new purpose and prestige. Originally intended to oversee customs inspections for goods entering the Brazilian Empire (fiscalização, hence the name Ilha Fiscal), it became a symbol of grandeur. Who could have imagined that an island once infamous for rodents would go on to host one of the most iconic events in Brazilian history?

The Last Dance of Ilha Fiscal

Ah, the year was 1889, the same year when the building was created, and the Brazilian Empire was in its final days, though no one at the time knew it. On November 9, Emperor Dom Pedro II and Rio’s elite gathered at Ilha Fiscal palace for what would go down in history as “O Último Baile do Império” (“The Last Dance of the Empire”). With exquisite gowns, dazzling jewels, and the finest music of the time, the ball was nothing short of spectacular. But less than a week later, the monarchy fell, and Brazil became a republic. It’s a bittersweet tale: the end of an era wrapped in the sparkle of one unforgettable night! If you want to know where the Royal family stayed before leaving Brazil, enjoy our Petrópolis RioLIVE!
