How about traveling back in time without leaving Rio de Janeiro? During our RioLIVE! Ilha Fiscal Visit, we’ll explore one of the city’s most beautiful and fascinating historical sites while practicing Portuguese and discovering more about Brazilian history! Located in Guanabara Bay, Ilha Fiscal immediately catches your attention with its small green Neo-Gothic castle. But beyond its incredible architecture and beautiful views of Rio, this place was also the setting for one of the most famous events during the final days of the Brazilian Empire.

Built in the 19th century during the reign of Dom Pedro II, the Ilha Fiscal building was designed to serve as a customs inspection post for ships arriving at the Port of Rio de Janeiro. The emperor himself was reportedly fascinated by the island’s location and closely followed the building’s design and construction. With its towers, stained-glass windows, decorative details and Neo-Gothic architecture, the small palace looks like something straight out of a fairy tale.
Today, Ilha Fiscal is part of the Brazilian Navy’s cultural complex and preserves an important part of the history of Rio and Brazil.
Our experience begins by learning more about the island’s original purpose and its importance during Brazil’s imperial period. During the visit, we’ll observe architectural details, explore historical spaces and imagine what Rio de Janeiro was like at the end of the 19th century.
And, of course, we’ll do all of this while practicing Portuguese with your teacher and classmates!
Ilha Fiscal became especially famous for hosting the event known as the Last Ball of the Empire. In November 1889, a grand celebration was held there in honor of the crew of a Chilean ship. The event brought together members of the imperial family, politicians and important figures from society at the time. What made this party so famous? Just a few days later, the Republic was proclaimed and the Brazilian monarchy came to an end.
Because of this, the ball went down in history as one of the last major social events of Imperial Brazil.
During our visit, we’ll also have time to admire the incredible architecture of Ilha Fiscal. Colorful stained-glass windows, towers, arches, clocks and many decorative elements make the building one of the most photogenic places in Rio. It’s also a great opportunity to learn new Portuguese vocabulary related to architecture, history, monarchy and Brazilian culture.
In addition to all its history, Ilha Fiscal’s location offers a different perspective of the city. Surrounded by the waters of Guanabara Bay, we’ll be able to see Downtown Rio and its landscape from a different point of view, while also taking plenty of photos throughout the experience.
At RioLIVE!, we believe that learning Portuguese also means gaining a better understanding of the country’s culture and history. During our visit to Ilha Fiscal, you’ll be able to practice Portuguese naturally, ask questions, talk about historical events and learn new words while exploring a real piece of Brazil’s past.
