Hello friends, ready to learn Portuguese online? Today we’re going to practice a topic that you already know: IR verbs in the present tense.

How to conjugate IR Verbs in the Present Tense

You already know that in Portuguese we divide our verbs by their terminations, we have verbs that end in AR, ER, IR and AIR. It’s good to pay attention to this because it helps us to know how to conjugate each type of verb.

Today we are going to talk about the IR verbs in the present tense! First of all, can you think of any verbs ending in IR? Let me help you with some examples: abrir (to open), assistir (to watch), discutir (to discuss), permitir (to allow).  If you want to know more verbs, check out this Dica with other tenses of these verbs.

Now, let’s take a look at some verbs!

 

Verbs ending in Ir in Portuguese. Abrir (presente). Conjugation of abrir in the present tense: eu abro, você abre, ele/ela abre, nós abrimos, vocês abrem, eles/elas abrem.

Regular Verbs in IR

We can follow the pattern of the verb abrir (to open) for the regular verbs. You have to identify the part of the verb that doesn’t change and add the correct termination according to who you’re talking about.

Let’s take a look at some IR Verbs Present Tense that are regular.

Abrir To open
Dividir To divide/share
Partir To leave
Permitir To allow
Assistir To watch

Irregular Verbs in IR

You already know what to do with the regular verbs ending in IR. Now let’s talk about the verbs in IR that have one or more irregular forms. The irregular verbs follow the same patterns that we saw above, but sometimes in one person – or more – they change their form, and we just have to memorize this! Some of these verbs are:

Fugir To run away
Dormir To sleep
Rir To laugh
Mentir To lie
Pedir To ask

These 5 verbs will have their forms changed in the first person. Take a look at the comparison:

Complete these sentences by conjugating these verbs correctly:

  1. (pedir) Nós ______ pizza para a janta.
  2. (fugir) Ele sempre ______ do sol quando está na rua.
  3. (dormir) Elas ______ cedo todos os dias.
  4. (rir) Eu sempre ______ das piadas da Melissa.
  5. (mentir) As pessoas ______ constantemente.

Now it’s time to put this all together and complete our last exercise! Change the verbs in the infinitive to the correct forms in each sentence.

  1. Minha gata dormir na cama.
  2. Seus cachorros dormir na sua cama?
  3. Quem pedir a conta quando você vai ao restaurante com os amigos?
  4. Eu sempre pedir a conta.
  5. A pele dele é muito branca, então ele sempre fugir do sol.
  6. Eles fugir de nós.
  7. Nós discutir sobre o filme de ontem.
  8. Eu discutir sobre política.
  9. Ele sempre rir das minhas piadas.
  10. Esta comediante é boa? Vocês sempre rir das piadas dela.
  11. Hoje eu assistir ao filme que você me recomentou.
  12. Nós assistir ao pôr-do-sol juntas!

Après 3 semaines que je suis dans cette école et je peux déjà parler portugais. Certe avec des erreurs mais j'ai fait des progrès fulgurant. C'est vraiment fantastique...RioAndLearn. Les cours de portugais...ça vaut vraiment la peine. Les cours ont lieu du lundi au vendredi, (de 9h à 13h) et en après midi, ce sont des activités libres en groupe. (Soccer de plage, volleyball , excursions, visites des lieux touristiques, etc) Vendredi soir, on est allé à Lapa, un quartier nocturne de Rio. C'est quelque chose à voir! Des rues bondées de monde, des orchestres, des discothèques...Allô les décibels! L'apprentissage du portugais se fait en immersion, aussi bien en salle de classe que dans les activités extérieures organisées par Rio&Learn.
