Já in Portuguese

example of já in portuguese: você já viajou para o rio de janeiro?

What’s up, guys! Today, we are going to talk about  in Portuguese. The time adverb has different forms inside the Portuguese language. And it’s also used a lot in the daily lifes of Brazilians. But what do we use it for? Well, let’s take a look at our class today and get ready já já!

Examples with Já in Portuguese

We can use to determine concluded actions:

  • Eu terminei o trabalho.
    I have already finished work.
  • João, fez o que pedimos?
João, have you done what we asked yet?
  • Você está pronta?
    Are you ready yet?
  • Nós conversamos sobre isso.
We have already talked about that.
This is the best cake I have ever eaten!

Questions Using Já in Portuguese

example with já in portuguese: será que eles já aprenderam a surfar?

We can also use já in Portuguese to make questions in order to find out things about something or somebody. In general, the answers for já (ever), use to be sim, eu já (yes, I have) or não, nunca (no, I have never). Let’s take a look:

  • Será que ele voltou de viagem?
Has he really  been back from the trip yet?
Have you ever been accused of something you didn’t do?
  • Luciana: Você desmaiou na rua?
    Patrícia: Sim, já.
Luciana: Have you ever passed out on the street?
    Patrícia:  Yes, I have.
  • Carla: Você foi à Turquia?
    Roberto: Nunca fui.
Carla: Have you ever been to Turkey?
Roberto: I have never been to.

What about Ainda?

We can also use ainda to express the idea that something continues to be done or will be done in the future. Let’s see:

  • João: Você  passou alguma vergonha em público?
    Paulo: Ainda não, e você?
João: Have you ever been embarrassed in public?
    Paulo: Not yet, and you?
  • Pedro: Você terminou o relatório que pedi?
    Lucas: Não, ainda não terminei.
Pedro: Have you finished the report yet?
Lucas: No, I haven’t finished yet.

What does it mean Já Já?

Well, if you hear this adverb doubled in a sentence, it usually don’t have the same meaning as the single já. Brazilians use this expression to communicate when something is going to happen immediately after the phrasing:

  • João, eu vou na padaria e volto já já!
João, I am going to the bakery and I will come back quickly!
  • Eu vou já já estudar pra prova.
Soon, I am going to study for the exam.

Obviously, you will find people that will tell you já já, but they don’t actually mean they will do something immediately. That can be very annoying!

Small classes, diverse accents, and engaging professors make Rio & Learn Online a fantastic choice! I've been thrilled with my experience at Rio & Learn Online so far. The small class sizes (around 1-3 others students) allow for personalized attention and plenty of opportunities to practice speaking. What's more, having different professors throughout the program exposes you to various accents, preparing you for real-world interactions. I opted for the full-time program, which involves 2 hours of daily learning from Monday to Friday. After just over 12 weeks, I can confidently say my Portuguese has improved dramatically. The professors are incredibly engaging and encourage students to utilize real-life examples, solidifying the learning process. While I'm only halfway through the program, I'm confident in recommending Rio & Learn Online to anyone seeking to learn Portuguese in a supportive and effective environment. I've gone from being a complete beginner (only knowing hi and bye) to holding conversations - and I'm excited to see how much further I can progress! I'll be back with another review after completing the program, but for now: Rio & Learn Online - highly recommended!

I've been taking the group online courses with Rio&Learn for 2 months. They offer a fantastic way to learn Portuguese and get speaking practice if you don't live in Brazil. The teachers are engaging and are able to adjust their level of Portuguese to whatever level you are at. Obrigado!
