Want to discover a side of Rio de Janeiro that most tourists never see? Join our RioLIVE! Activity in Madureira, one of the most vibrant and culturally important neighborhoods in Rio’s North Zone! Known for its strong samba traditions, lively streets and local culture, Madureira is the perfect place to leave the tourist bubble behind and experience everyday carioca life while practicing Portuguese in real situations.

Why Visit Madureira?

Madureira is one of the great homes of samba in Rio, closely connected to legendary samba schools such as Portela and Império Serrano. The neighborhood was also immortalized in “O Meu Lugar”, the famous samba by Arlindo Cruz, a declaration of love for Madureira, its people, streets and traditions. During this RioLIVE!, you won’t just hear about this culture, you’ll experience it!

Our RioLIVE! Adventure

1. Mercadão de Madureira

We start at the famous Mercadão de Madureira, one of Rio’s largest and most traditional popular markets. With hundreds of stores, you can find almost everything here: clothes, Havaianas, sweets, accessories, household products, souvenirs and much more. Cariocas even joke that if you can’t find it at the Mercadão, it probably doesn’t exist! It’s also the perfect place to practice Portuguese while asking about prices, discovering new products and interacting with local shopkeepers.

2. Discover Madureira

From the Mercadão, we’ll walk through the lively streets of the neighborhood toward Parque Madureira Mestre Monarco. Along the way, you’ll experience the rhythm of everyday life in Rio’s North Zone and discover an atmosphere completely different from the beaches and tourist areas of the city.

3. Parque Madureira

At Parque Madureira, one of Rio’s largest urban parks, we’ll have time to explore, relax and enjoy one of the neighborhood’s favorite meeting places. Depending on the weather, you might even cool off near the park’s artificial waterfall!
Tip: Bring sunscreen, water and a canga if you want to relax on the grass.

4. Feel the Samba

Of course, we can’t visit Madureira without talking about samba! The neighborhood has played an essential role in the history of the genre, and whenever our schedule allows, we’ll experience some of the music and energy that make Madureira so special. Listen to the percussion, feel the rhythm and don’t be afraid to join in!
