Learning the Portuguese words ending in -mente

We have a lot of Portuguese words ending in -mente. A lot of these words that end in –mente are adverbs and that’s exactly what we are going to study today. This help us  to identify these words and understand them in sentences.

Another important thing is: in English a lot of adverbs end with -ly. So, what is really interesting is that the majority of these words in English have a corresponding word in Portuguese that ends in –mente. You are going to see many examples today to demonstrate this perfectly (perfeitamente) …see what I did there? 😛

Formation of adverbs ending in -mente in Portuguese

Adverbs ending in mente in Portuguese. Para transformarmos um adjetivo em um advérbio, temos que passar o adjetivo do masculino para o feminino, e em seguida adicionar o sufixo mente.

The adverbs ending in -mente replace a preposition followed by a noun:

So, instead of using the preposition com (with) + another word, we can transform the noun used to make an adverb and use just one word to describe the same thing. Take a look to see how we do it:

Ele age com calma. Ele age calmamente. He acts calmly.
Os policiais agiram com violência. Os policiais agiram violentamente. The policemen acted violently.
Ele falou comigo com pressa. Ele falou comigo apressadamente. He talked to me in a hurry.
Faça o trabalho com cuidado. Faça o trabalho cuidadosamente. Do your job carefully.
Ele trabalha com honestidade. Ele trabalha honestamente. He works honestly.
Ela trabalha com delicadeza. Ela trabalha delicadamente. She works gently.

Use the adverbs in the correct form. Transform the word between parenthesis into an adverb.

1) Ontem a festa foi muito boa, todos dançaram __________. (Alegre)
2) Apesar de todos os problemas, ela está agindo ___________ no seu dia a dia. (Tranquilo)
3) Para não interromper a reunião, Carlos entrou na sala __________. (Discreto)
4) Precisamos falar __________. Essa situação precisa ser resolvida. (Honesto)
5) Peter se adaptou ao Rio de Janeiro __________. (Rápido)
6) As RioLIVE! Activities são __________ perfeitas. (Simples)
7) Gosto de andar __________ pela praia, assim posso ter uma ótima vista. (Calmo)

To practice even further, transform these sentences. you’ll see that we used the preposition com + a noun, and you have to transform it into one word: the correct adverb.

  1. Eles cantaram com tranquilidade.
  2. Escuto suas músicas com frequência.
  3. O professor explica com energia.
  4. Pare de andar com rapidez. Tenha calma!
  5. É necessário dar aula com paciência.
  6. Ande com silêncio, tem pessoas dormindo!
  7. Com delicadeza ela toca o piano.
  8. Fazemos festa com diversão e com alegria.
  9. É importante tratar as pessoas com honestidade.
  10. Vamos sair daqui com pressa.

C'est vraiment fantastique...RioAndLearn. Les cours de portugais...ça vaut vraiment la peine. Les cours ont lieu du lundi au vendredi, (de 9h à 13h) et en après midi, ce sont des activités libres en groupe. (Soccer de plage, volleyball , excursions, visites des lieux touristiques, etc) Vendredi soir, on est allé à Lapa, un quartier nocturne de Rio. C'est quelque chose à voir! Des rues bondées de monde, des orchestres, des discothèques...Allô les décibels! L'apprentissage du portugais se fait en immersion, aussi bien en salle de classe que dans les activités extérieures organisées par Rio&Learn.
