What’s up, friends? Today’s Dica will teach us a bit about the nominalization of verbs in Portuguese and we’ll complete an exercise to practice what we’ve learned.

Nominalization of Verbs in Portuguese

First of all, what is the nominalization of verbs in Portuguese? It the process we use when we want to transform verbs into nouns.

Let’s look at a short list of verbs that can be transformed into nouns below:

Examples of nominalization of Verbs in Portuguese

Here we have the verbs and then the noun of each verb.

Partir – A partida To leave (depart) – Departure
Chegar – A chegada To arrive – Arrival
Empregar – O emprego To employ – Job (employment)
Trabalhar – O trabalho To work – Work
Proibir – A proibição To ban (prohibit) – Prohibition
Permitir – A permissão To allow (permit) – Permission
Pintar – A pintura To paint – Painting
Discutir – A discussão To discuss – Discussion
Ver – A vista To see (view) – View
Estudar – O estudo To study – Study
 Jogar – O jogo To play – Game 
 Beijar – O beijo To kiss – Kiss 
 Caminhar – A caminhada To walk – Walk 
Optar – A opção  To choose (opt) – Option
 Decidir – A decisão To decide – Decision 
 Viajar – A viagem To travel – Trip
Brincar – A brincadeira To play – Joke

Now, let’s see some examples where we use the nouns replacing the verbs:

The plane departs at 21:45.
The plane’s departure will be at 9:45 pm.
Estávamos esperando você chegar.
Estávamos todos esperando pela sua chegada.
We were all waiting for you to arrive.
We were all waiting for your arrival.
Nós gostamos muito de trabalhar.
Nós gostamos muito do nosso trabalho.
We like working very much.
We like our job very much.
Proibir cigarro em lugares fechados é muito bom para a saúde de todos.
A proibição do cigarro em lugares fechados é muito boa para a saúde de todos.
  Prohibiting smoking in closed places is very good for everybody’s health.
The prohibition of smoking in closed places is very good for everybody’s health.
O professor me permitiu sair da sala.
O professor me deu permissão para sair da sala.
The teacher allowed me to leave the classroom.
The teacher gave me permission to leave the classroom.

Discutiram na empresa sobre os planos para o próximo ano.
Houve uma discussão na empresa sobre os planos para o próximo ano.
  In the company they discussed the plans for next year.
There was a discussion in the company about the plans for next year.
O aluno curtiu muito ver a cidade no Pão de Açúcar.
O aluno curtiu muito a vista do Pão de Açúcar.
The student really enjoyed seeing the city from Pão de Açúcar.
The student really enjoyed the view from Pão de Açúcar.

Après 3 semaines que je suis dans cette école et je peux déjà parler portugais. Certe avec des erreurs mais j'ai fait des progrès fulgurant. En plus, du Lundi au Vendredi l'ecole propose des activitées qu'il appelle "Rio Live" ce qui permet de visiter en même temps Rio tout en parlant Portugais et de rencontrer des gens😃 Toute l'équipe est genial et est prêts à aider si besoin 😁

C'est vraiment fantastique...RioAndLearn. Les cours de portugais...ça vaut vraiment la peine. Les cours ont lieu du lundi au vendredi, (de 9h à 13h) et en après midi, ce sont des activités libres en groupe. (Soccer de plage, volleyball , excursions, visites des lieux touristiques, etc) Vendredi soir, on est allé à Lapa, un quartier nocturne de Rio. C'est quelque chose à voir! Des rues bondées de monde, des orchestres, des discothèques...Allô les décibels! L'apprentissage du portugais se fait en immersion, aussi bien en salle de classe que dans les activités extérieures organisées par Rio&Learn.
