Can’t recommend Rio & Learn enough. I started with zero confidence, but their online lessons focus entirely on conversation, starting with small, manageable chats and building up from there. The teachers are fantastic—patient, encouraging, and great craic. It never feels like a rigid grammar lecture; it just feels like a natural conversation that gets a bit more advanced as you improve. If you want to actually start speaking the language without feeling overwhelmed, this is the way to do it.

I took part in an online group course for 5 weeks and it was a great experience. The school is very well organized, with flexible schedules, teachers are great and professional, the classes focus on conversation and grammar and most importantly I feel much more confident and skilled in speaking portuguese after this course. Also loved the fact that you have the opportunity to study with various teachers and that the school is focused on your individual progress and therefore may place you in different groups based on your performance. Super recommended!

I can’t say enough good things about this school and its people. When I arrived in Brazil, I could only speak a few words of Portuguese. After just the first week, I found that I was able to start to communicate with people I met. After 6 weeks, I feel very comfortable having conversations with people. I watched them perform a miracle with another student who arrived with no Portuguese and whose native language was Asian. The staff is incredibly patient, friendly and helpful to the students. The activities offered for free in the afternoons and weekends also give you both an opportunity to practice your language skills and also explore Rio de Janeiro without paying for a guide. In addition, many activities take you to places not readily available to tourists so that you can see and experience the native life.
If you are thinking about coming to Brazil, I would recommend you take at least a few classes online before arriving. I was very surprised that there is little to no English or Spanish speaking people even in the tourist areas. I wish I would have done this before I came.
If I could, I would give this school much higher than 5 stars.

I've been learning Portuguese online with Rio & Learn since January as preparation for my Brazil trip in July/August and have had a great experience with them! The administrative team and my teacher Léo have been nothing but kind and accommodating. Léo incorporates a lot of historical and cultural parts in his classes, which I really enjoy. Looking forward to visiting the actual school in Rio soon😊 Muito obrigada!

I have been very pleased with Rio & Learn for my remote portuguese lessons. They are very helpful / responsive in scheduling lessons and the professors are very likeable, talented teachers. They offer lots of great little extras as well (like daily emails, informal (free) additional group sessions and whatsapp chats). Good people; better teachers!
