Portuguese Contractions
Most of the Portuguese contractions are done by the connection of prepositions, definite and indefinite articles. These prepositions are : em, de, para, por, a. Let’s see how they are formed.
Contractions with Em
The preposition em can be contracted with the definite articles o, a, os, as and also theΒ indefinite articles um, uma, uns, umas. The contractions are according to masculine and feminine nouns, singular and plural too. Let’s see it:
[one_third]Em + o = no
Em + a = na
Em + os = nos
Em + as = nas[/one_third][one_third_last]Em + um = num
Em + uma = numa
Em + uns = nuns
Em + umas = numas[/one_third_last]

Contractions with De
The preposition De can be contracted only with definite articles. Let’s see it:
De + o = do
De + a = da
De + os = dos
De + as + das

Vasco da Gama is a football team from Rio de Janeiro.

My friends’ house is very big.
Contractions with Para
The preposition para can be contracted with definite and indefinite articles:
[one_third]Para + o = pro
Para + a = pra
Para + os = pros
Para + as = pras[/one_third][one_third_last]Para + um = prum
Para + uma = pruma
Para + uns = pruns
Para + umas = prumas[/one_third_last]

Contractions with Por
The preposition por is contracted only with definite articles. Check this out:
Por + o = pelo
Por + a = pela
Por + os = pelos
Por + as = pelas

We will travel around Brazil after studying at Rio & Learn.
Sempre vejo as notΓcias pela internet.
I always see the news through the internet.

Contractions with A
And we can also contract the preposition A only with definite articles:
A + o = o
A + a = Γ
A + os = aos
A + as = Γ s
