Portuguese IR Verbs

Hello, friends! How are you? Today we will talk to you about Portuguese IR Verbs  in the present, past and future tenses. Come with us!

Learning the Portuguese IR Verbs

Let’s start our lessons using the verb abrir as an example. It’s a regular verbs and it has fixed rules. Take a look at the chart below!

Present Simple

The regular Portuguese IR Verbs will have the same rule as the regular verbs ending in ER for the first, second and third person (that is: the singular ones). Let’s see the verb comer (to eat)  for example:

Eu Como
Você Come
Ele/ela Come

Now compare with the conjugation below:

Verbs ending in Ir in Portuguese. Conjugation of abrir in the present tense: Eu abro, você abre, ele abre, nós abrimos, vocês abrem, eles abrem.

So, to conjugate these verbs you just have to separate the part of the verb that doesn’t change and then add o/e/e respectively to the first three singular persons. But what about the plural?

The plural of vocês and eles/elas will also follow the same pattern with IR verbs and ER verbs in the present. You just have to add -em. Compare these conjugations of the ER verb comer  to the conjugations above:

Vocês Comem
Eles/elas Comem

Okay, and what do we do with the conjugation of nós (we)?  We separate the radical of the verb (the part that doesn’t change) and we will add the traditional termination of nós: -mos. But before we do that, we have to add a vowel. To the Portuguese IR verbs this vowel will be an i and for the ER verbs, for example, it’ll be an e. Take a look:

Nós comemos (We eat) x Nós abrimos (We open)

You’ll be able to follow these tips with all IR Regular verbs in the present form.

Eu abro a porta.
I open the door.

Você assiste séries todos os dias.
You watch tv shows every day.

Nós sempre dividimos a conta.
We always share the bill.

Elas discutem com muita frequência.
They argue often.

Past Simple

To learn the simple past, it’s a good ideia to compare it once again to the ER verbs in the past. We can use the same rules and patterns, but instead of the e that you’ll see in the termination of ER verbs, we will use an i. Compare the conjugation of the verb comer with the conjugation below:

Eu Comi
Você Comeu
Ele/Ela Comeu
Nós Comemos
Vocês Comeram
Eles/elas Comeram

Verbs ending in Ir in Portuguese. Verbs ending in Ir in Portuguese. Conjugation of abrir in the past tense: Eu abri, você abriu, ele abriu, nós abrimos, vocês abriram, eles abriram.

You just have to identify the part of the verb that doesn’t change and then add these terminations. You’ve probably noticed that the first person (eu) already had an i.  In this case, nothing will change because we already have the letter we needed, you just have to use the radical of the verb you need, of course.

Ela partiu o bolo para todos os convidados.
She cut the cake for all the guests.

Eu comi muito ontem à noite.
I ate a lot last night.

Eu e Ana imprimimos a apresentação.
Ana and I printed the presentation.

Eles cumpriram tudo o que prometeram.
They kept everything they promised.

Future Simple

This one is very easy and follows the same pattern as all of the regular verbs in all the different conjugations. To put a regular verb into the future form, you just have to take the infinitive form and add the terminations you see below.

Verbs ending in Ir in Portuguese. Verbs ending in Ir in Portuguese. Conjugation of abrir in the future tense: Eu abrirei, você abrirá, ele abrirá, nós abriremos, vocês abrirão, eles abrirão.

Ela decidirá se quer viajar com o marido ou não.
She will decide whether she wants to travel with her husband or not.

Eu insistirei para você ir comigo.
I will insist that you go with me.

Nós abriremos uma nova empresa mês que vem.
We will open a new company next month.

I’ve just started online classes with Prof. Ana Carolina & she is the absolute best! It’s my first time learning Portuguese and I was speaking full sentences in the first class. Obrigada!

Small classes, diverse accents, and engaging professors make Rio & Learn Online a fantastic choice! I've been thrilled with my experience at Rio & Learn Online so far. The small class sizes (around 1-3 others students) allow for personalized attention and plenty of opportunities to practice speaking. What's more, having different professors throughout the program exposes you to various accents, preparing you for real-world interactions. I opted for the full-time program, which involves 2 hours of daily learning from Monday to Friday. After just over 12 weeks, I can confidently say my Portuguese has improved dramatically. The professors are incredibly engaging and encourage students to utilize real-life examples, solidifying the learning process. While I'm only halfway through the program, I'm confident in recommending Rio & Learn Online to anyone seeking to learn Portuguese in a supportive and effective environment. I've gone from being a complete beginner (only knowing hi and bye) to holding conversations - and I'm excited to see how much further I can progress! I'll be back with another review after completing the program, but for now: Rio & Learn Online - highly recommended!

Après 3 semaines que je suis dans cette école et je peux déjà parler portugais. Certe avec des erreurs mais j'ai fait des progrès fulgurant. En plus, du Lundi au Vendredi l'ecole propose des activitées qu'il appelle "Rio Live" ce qui permet de visiter en même temps Rio tout en parlant Portugais et de rencontrer des gens😃 Toute l'équipe est genial et est prêts à aider si besoin 😁
I've been taking the group online courses with Rio&Learn for 2 months. They offer a fantastic way to learn Portuguese and get speaking practice if you don't live in Brazil. The teachers are engaging and are able to adjust their level of Portuguese to whatever level you are at. Obrigado!
