Today, we are going to talk about the use of the preposition ‘De’ in Portuguese.

The preposition ‘De’ may vary and we use this preposition to determine origem (origin), posse (possession) or the material that an object is made of. Let’s learn the different variations of the preposition ‘De’ in Portuguese.

Preposition ‘De’ in PortuguesePreposition De in Portuguese. Variations of the preposition De: de + artigo o = do. de + artigo a = da. de + artigo os = dos. de + artigo as = das.

Now let’s see the different ways we can use the preposition ‘De’ :

‘De’ for origin

De onde você é?
Where are you from?

Eu sou do Rio de Janeiro.
I’m from Rio de Janeiro.

Ele é dos Estados Unidos.
He is from the United States.

Nós somos de Recife.
We are from Recife.

When we talk about “origin”, the preposition ‘De’ varies according to the countries (or cities) with articles.

‘De’ for possession

O carro do meu pai é azul.
My father‘s car is blue.

As bolsas das mulheres são muito bonitas.
The women‘s purses are very pretty.

Vamos para a casa do Albert amanhã.
We’ll go to Albert‘s house tomorrow.

O cachorro do meu vizinho late o dia todo.
My neighbor‘s dog barks all day.

Take a look at how the preposition ‘De’ varies depending on the whether the noun that follows is masculine, feminine, singular and/or plural.

‘De’ for material (descriptive)

Esta casa é de madeira.
This house is made of wood.

O copo é de plástico.
The glass is made of plastic.

Ele comprou alianças de ouro.
He bought rings made of gold.

Você tem uma blusa de algodão?
Do you have a blouse made of cotton?

Notice that when we talk about materials, the preposition ‘De’ is not altered.

Preposition ‘De’ with Indefinite Article

Although it’s not grammatically correct for writing purposes, or written speech, we often use the preposition ‘De’ mashed-up with an indefinite article when we speak. Take a look:

Preposição De + artigo indefinido Nós unimos a preposição De com artigos indefinidos quando falamos: - de + um = dum - de + uma = duma - de + uns = duns - de + umas = dumas

Eu gosto dum filme com a Fernanda Montenegro, mas não lembro o nome.
I like a movie with Fernanda Montenegro, but I don’t remember the name.

Você fala duns assuntos que ninguém entende.
You talk about some stuff that nobody understands.

Ele é duma cidade no interior de São Paulo.
He is from a small town in São Paulo.

Hoje é sexta! Precisamos dumas cervejas.
Today is Friday! We need some beers.

Complete the following sentences using the correct preposition ‘De’ (its proper variation) with definite articles. Then, classify each of the sentences in origem, posse or material:

  2. A casa é ___ madeira. (______) – The house is made out of wood.
  3. Eles são ___ São Paulo. (______) – They’re from Sao Paulo.
  4. Ela é ___ Rússia. (______) – She’s from Russia.
  5. A casa é ___ tijolos. (______) – It’s a brick house.
  6. O copo é ___ plástico. (______) It’s a plastic cup.
  7. Eles são ___ Estados Unidos. (______) They’re from the United States.
  8. Nós não somos ___ Japão. (______) – We are from Japan.
  9. O livro é ___ criança. (______) – It’s a children’s book.
  10. A casa não é ___ madeira. (_______) – The house is not made out of wood.
  11. Os computadores são ___ escola. (_____) – The computers belong to the school.
  12. Os livros não são ___ João. (_____) – The books are not Joao’s.
  13. Você é ___ Alemanha? (______) – Are you from Germany?
  14. Ela não é ___ Israel. (______) – She’s not from Israel.

C'est vraiment fantastique...RioAndLearn. Les cours de portugais...ça vaut vraiment la peine. Les cours ont lieu du lundi au vendredi, (de 9h à 13h) et en après midi, ce sont des activités libres en groupe. (Soccer de plage, volleyball , excursions, visites des lieux touristiques, etc) Vendredi soir, on est allé à Lapa, un quartier nocturne de Rio. C'est quelque chose à voir! Des rues bondées de monde, des orchestres, des discothèques...Allô les décibels! L'apprentissage du portugais se fait en immersion, aussi bien en salle de classe que dans les activités extérieures organisées par Rio&Learn.
