We’re going to take a look at that in a hot minute, but first, check out the conjugation of the verb ir in the present tense:

Using Ir to Talk About Direction and Place

An important thing to remember when using the verb ir in Portuguese is that, just like in English, we need a preposition to indicate the place we want to go to. In Portuguese, that preposition is either para or a. Just be careful when using a, because sometimes you may need to use the “A” accent in Portuguese!

Besides the verb ir, it’s important to understand two other structures. We have Dicas just for them, so you can review these structures if necessary. First, you have to know how to use the verb ir with the preposition de, and second, use this verb and preposition in combination with a means of transportation.

Examples to Indicate Direction and Place

I always go to the movies during the weekend.

Minha mãe vai para Pequim em agosto.
My mother goes to Beijing in August.

Eu e meus amigos vamos à Confeitaria Colombo na RioLIVE! de hoje.
My friends and I go to Confeitaria Colombo in today’s RioLIVE!

Using Ir to Talk About the Future

Now, if you want to talk about a future action, you can simply use the present tense of ir in Portuguese with another verb in the infinitive form. Usually, this form of the future is only used with confirmed future plans (not something you think you might do), and only for the near future (not three years from now!). You can read more about it in this Dica.

Small classes, diverse accents, and engaging professors make Rio & Learn Online a fantastic choice! I've been thrilled with my experience at Rio & Learn Online so far. The small class sizes (around 1-3 others students) allow for personalized attention and plenty of opportunities to practice speaking. What's more, having different professors throughout the program exposes you to various accents, preparing you for real-world interactions. I opted for the full-time program, which involves 2 hours of daily learning from Monday to Friday. After just over 12 weeks, I can confidently say my Portuguese has improved dramatically. The professors are incredibly engaging and encourage students to utilize real-life examples, solidifying the learning process. While I'm only halfway through the program, I'm confident in recommending Rio & Learn Online to anyone seeking to learn Portuguese in a supportive and effective environment. I've gone from being a complete beginner (only knowing hi and bye) to holding conversations - and I'm excited to see how much further I can progress! I'll be back with another review after completing the program, but for now: Rio & Learn Online - highly recommended!
