In our Dica today, we are going to learn a little about the invariable relative pronouns.

The relative pronouns are used to avoid the repetition of an element in the structure. The relative pronoun Que, is also known as universal because it can replace people, places and things. Let’s see some examples using the pronoun Que:

Examples with the pronoun Que

O livro é caro. Eu comprei o livro.
O livro que eu comprei é caro.
The book is expensive. I bought the book.
The book that I bought is expensive.

O carro é bonito. Ela quer o carro.
O carro que ela quer é bonito.
The car is beautiful. She wants the car.
The car that she wants is beautiful.

Eu conheço o homem. Ela gosta do homem.
Eu conheço o homem que ela gosta.
I know the man. She likes this man.
I know the man that she likes.

Now, we are going to see some structures using the pronoun Quem (to replace people).

Examples with the pronoun Quem

A moça não gosta de mim. Eu gosto dela.
A moça de quem eu gosto não gosta de mim.
She doesn’t like me. I like her.
The girl who I like doesn’t like me.

O homem é simpático. Eu falo com o homem sempre.
O homem com quem eu sempre falo é simpático.
The man is friendly. I always talk to him.
The man with whom I always talk is friendly.

Eles estavam estudando. Eu pedi a ajuda deles.
Os rapazes para quem eu pedi ajuda estavam estudando.
They were studying. I asked him some help.
The boys to whom I asked some help were studying.

And, to finish, we are going to see some structures using the pronoun which (to replace places).

Examples with the pronoun Onde

A escola é muito boa. Estudamos na escola.
A escola onde estudamos é muito boa.
The school is very good. We study at the school.
The school in which we study is very good.

A cidade maravilhosa é animada. Estamos morando na cidade maravilhosa.
A cidade onde estamos morando é animada.
The wonderful city is lively. We are living here.
The city which we are living in is wonderful.

A Rio & Learn fica na Siqueira Campos. A Siqueira Campos é perto da praia de Copacabana.
A rua onde fica a Rio & Learn é perto da praia de Copacabana.
Rio & Learn is located on Siqueira Campos street. Siqueira Campos is close to Copacabana’s Beach.
The street in which Rio & Learn is located is close to Copacabana’s Beach. 

All these pronouns are invariable, so, it isn’t possible to change the genre (masculine and feminine) or number (singular and plural). Now that you know all that, what about creating sentences using these invariable relative pronouns?
