Ruins Park in Rio de Janeiro
Ruins Park or Parque das Ruínas is a public park and cultural center, located in Santa Teresa neighborhood. The park got its name after the ruins of an ancient mansion. It used to be called Palacete Murtinho Nobre.
At the beginning of 20th century the palace belonged to Laurinda Santos Lobo. She was a famous lady in Rio’s high society. She used to have parties in her house in the 1920s, and the place ended up becoming a meeting point of modernism in Rio de Janeiro.
After she died, the palace was abandoned and partially destroyed but in the 1990s the state of Rio started a restoration and in 1997 Ruins Park was opened. Nowadays the Park offers a variety of cultural events.
