The tour of Santa Marta was enjoyable for several reasons: the smiles and greetings from the folks who live there, the beautiful views and learning about the history and politics of the place. We saw the statue of Michael Jackson and got to do some souvenir shopping. I enjoyed visiting and meeting three generations of a local family. Our guide was a walking encyclopedia and since I am not fluent yet, I did not get 100%, but I did learn a lot from our very enthusiastic guide. He seemed to know personally everyone we passed! This was a fun activity with fellow students and one more opportunity to practice my developing ability to use Portuguese.

It is always nice to get to know the city in complete and not just the rich neighbourhoods of Copacabana and Ipanema. A lovely place to visit to get to know some Rio history and to see amazing views is Favela Santa Marta. Last Saturday we enjoyed with our students a sunny afternoon at Favela Santa Marta.
