Uruguaiana Market in Rio de Janeiro

This Dica will introduce you to a place where you can buy anything! Uruguaiana Market or, Centro Comercial Uruguaiana, is a popular market in Rio where you can buy everything you’re looking for, at the cheapest price in the city. It was created in 1994 so that the street vendors or as we call them, camelôs, could sell their products without walking around the city.

This market also has another name: Saara. Saara means Society of Friends Adjacent to Alfândega Street. We, from Rio de Janeiro, often call it Uruguaiana or Saara.

The point of creating this space was to make a place for the camelôs so they wouldn’t have to work on the streets anymore. Sometimes plans go wrong, right? The plan of our politicians didn’t work as well as they thought and you can still find vendors working on the streets today. The up side is that now we have this amazing place to go shopping! YEEEES!

What can I buy there? You ask. That’s very simple! Anything you want! Clothes, accessories, video games, jewelry… the thing is, everything you’re looking for will be cheaper here than anywhere else in the city. And, of course, it is THE BEST PLACE to buy souvenirs and gifts for your friends and family. Buying things is a great way to learn and practice your Portuguese in Brazil!

Security tips for Uruguaiana market

The place is amazing? Yes, but there are some things that you should know before going there. This is a not a specific tourist spot, it’s a popular market where just locals go. So, if you are a tourist you have to be extra careful there. People will see that you are foreigner and you have to pay close attention and be careful. If you want security tips about Rio, check out this Dica.

It’s important to use your backpack or bags close to your body and important things like documents, cellphone and your wallet must be hidden and kept close to you too.

If you are going to buy something, don’t buy in first store that you find. Take a little time to look for other stores because you are probably going to find cheaper prices if you do a little research. There they offer a lot of used and new cellphones as well as repairing services. Pay attention to this, because sometimes the cellphones that they sell there may be stolen products.

Buying products that are from well-known brands it’s not a good idea too, because, as you can imagine from the cheap price, they might be false.

Be aware of this, and go buy more common stuff such as souvenirs, products for your house, books, clothes, etc.. , that way you won’t have any problems.

Now are you ready to go shopping? So, let’s get to know the historic center of Rio and let’s buy buy buy!

I’ve just started online classes with Prof. Ana Carolina & she is the absolute best! It’s my first time learning Portuguese and I was speaking full sentences in the first class. Obrigada!

Small classes, diverse accents, and engaging professors make Rio & Learn Online a fantastic choice! I've been thrilled with my experience at Rio & Learn Online so far. The small class sizes (around 1-3 others students) allow for personalized attention and plenty of opportunities to practice speaking. What's more, having different professors throughout the program exposes you to various accents, preparing you for real-world interactions. I opted for the full-time program, which involves 2 hours of daily learning from Monday to Friday. After just over 12 weeks, I can confidently say my Portuguese has improved dramatically. The professors are incredibly engaging and encourage students to utilize real-life examples, solidifying the learning process. While I'm only halfway through the program, I'm confident in recommending Rio & Learn Online to anyone seeking to learn Portuguese in a supportive and effective environment. I've gone from being a complete beginner (only knowing hi and bye) to holding conversations - and I'm excited to see how much further I can progress! I'll be back with another review after completing the program, but for now: Rio & Learn Online - highly recommended!

I've been taking the group online courses with Rio&Learn for 2 months. They offer a fantastic way to learn Portuguese and get speaking practice if you don't live in Brazil. The teachers are engaging and are able to adjust their level of Portuguese to whatever level you are at. Obrigado!
