Visiting Favela Santa Marta was an extraordinary experience, filled with vibrant life and unexpected surprises. The narrow streets were alive with the energy of children playing football, their laughter echoing off the walls adorned with stunning street art. I was captivated by the breathtaking views of the city, a stark contrast to the intimate community life unfolding before me. Locals went about their daily routines, embodying a spirit of resilience and community. Discovering that Michael Jackson’s “They Don’t Care About Us” was filmed here added an unexpected layer of awe, making my visit to Favela Santa Marta a truly unforgettable journey.

Paraphrasing our student, we found unexpected surprises and a vibrant community during our visit to Santa Marta. This favela in Rio de Janeiro is a unique place. This hillside community offers a striking view of the city and the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue and you can also walk through the streets where Michael Jackson filmed his videoclip, which is now commemorated with a statue of him. As you explore its colorful streets, you’ll encounter a tight-knit community, vibrant art, and a rich cultural scene, with a vibrant life and unexpected (but good) surprises.
