Hi there!
Today we’ll talk about a very special number. Let’s learn a different way to say the number six in Portuguese.
Number Six in Portuguese: Seis or Meia?
In many times, instead of the number six, brazilian people say meia. We do that because meia is the short form of meia dúzia (half a dozen). Let’s take a look at some examples of the use of meia instead of the number six:
Examples using Meia
Você pode me ligar. Meu telefone é dois – seis – oito – um – três – três – cinco (268 – 1335).
Você pode me ligar. Meu telefone é dois – meia – oito – um – três – três – cinco (268 – 1335).
You can call me. My number is two – six – eight – one – three – three – five (268 – 1335).
Minha casa é no número um – seis – seis (166).
Minha casa é no número um – meia – meia (166).
My house is at the number one – six – six (166).
Meu celular é nove – três – quatro – zero – zero – um – seis (934 – 0016).
Meu celular é nove – três – quatro – zero – zero – um – meia (934 – 0016).
My cellphone number is nine – three – four – zero – zero – one – six (934 – 0016).
A placa do meu carro é K – U – B – três – seis – nove – seis (KUB-3696).
A placa do meu carro é K – U – B – três – meia – nove – meia (KUB-3696).
My license plate is K – U – B – three – six – nine – six (KUB-3696).
Notice that it’s only possible to use six instead of meia when we say a sequence of numbers, for example when you say a phone number. Have you ever learned Portuguese with a phone? There are so many possibilities, for example, learning Portuguese with the app OptiLingo. Did you know you can also study our Dicas on a phone? There are other situations where we cannot do the substitution. Let’s take a look.
Example where we cannot use Meia
Julia: Ele tem seis anos.
Julia: He is six years old.
Eduarda: No dia seis de janeiro.
Eduarda: It’s on January six.
Jéssica: Eu tenho seis canetas.
Jéssica: I have six pens.
