Where is São Luís?
São Luís is located in the northeastern region of Brazil, on an island in the Atlantic Ocean. Yep, it’s actually an island! Although connected to the mainland by bridges and highways, São Luís is geographically separated by rivers, mangroves, and bays, making it part of a riverine and marine island system in the state of Maranhão.
The São Luís International Airport (Aeroporto Internacional Marechal Cunha Machado) is the main gateway to the city, offering convenient access from several Brazilian hubs and a few international routes — perfect for those booking flights to São Luís and looking for a smooth arrival experience. You can also get to São Luís by long-distance bus from cities like Belém or Teresina, or even arrive by ferry if you’re exploring the surrounding islands. It’s easy to reach, and a great starting point for your island adventure!
A Brief History of São Luís
Founded by the French in 1612, conquered by the Portuguese in 1615 and with touches of Dutch occupation, São Luís is one of Brazil’s most unique cultural mosaics. Its Historic Centre of São Luís is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with over 3,000 colonial buildings adorned with azulejos (those beautiful painted tiles).
You can spend hours walking through the cobblestone streets of the Centro Histórico, marveling at pastel-colored mansions, churches, and squares. Some even say secret tunnels connect the old churches, legends that add to the mystery and magic of the city! Truly Instagrammable!

Things to Do in São Luís: How to Fall in Love with the City
There are plenty of things to do in São Luís! Here’s your list of must-sees:
🌄 Historic Downtown
Wander the historic center and visit:
- Palácio dos Leões: the governor’s palace with a panoramic view of the sea, and yes, it’s open to visitors! You can take a guided tour of its opulent rooms and learn about Maranhão’s political history.
- Casa das Tulhas: a traditional market with local food, cachaças and crafts. Prices are usually more affordable than in tourist restaurants, and it’s a great place to sample regional snacks or pick up unique souvenirs.
- Teatro Arthur Azevedo: one of the oldest theaters in Brazil, and yes, some believe it’s haunted by former performers! But don’t worry, it’s still in full operation today. You can catch live performances ranging from theater and music to dance, a perfect way to soak in São Luís’ cultural vibe.
🌴 Beaches of São Luís
Okay, okay, maybe cobblestone streets, azulejos and colonial architecture aren’t everyone’s idea of fun. If you’re more of a toes-in-the-sand, breeze-in-your-hair kind of traveler, São Luís has your escape: the beach! Yes, there are beaches right in the city! Some of the most famous are:
- Ponta d’Areia Beach: Located close to the city center, this beach is known for its calm waters and lively bars. It’s one of the easiest to reach, perfect for a relaxed afternoon or happy hour.

- Calhau Beach: Situated just a bit further along the coast in the eastern part of the city, Calhau is a favorite among locals for sunset strolls and enjoying fresh seafood at beachfront restaurants. It’s easily accessible by car or public transport, and connects smoothly with nearby beaches.

- Olho d’Água Beach: Nestled next to Calhau, this beach is more rustic and quieter, with a long stretch of sand that’s perfect for peaceful walks. You don’t need a guide, just bring your curiosity and maybe a coconut water in hand!

🌟 Lencóis Maranhenses
Just a few hours away from the city lies one of Brazil’s most surreal landscapes: the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. Picture endless white sand dunes with crystal-clear rainwater lagoons in between. The gateway to visit them is the town of Barreirinhas.
Pro Tip: Best time to visit is between June and September, when the lagoons are full.
You can even do a day tour or overnight from São Luís. It’s worth the trip!
The Flavors of São Luís
Prepare your taste buds, porque a comida maranhense é deliciosa! São Luís offers a culinary journey influenced by indigenous, African, and Portuguese traditions. Here are some local must-tries:
- Arroz de cuxá: a tangy, flavorful dish made with vinagreira leaves, sesame seeds, dried shrimp, and rice.
- Tapioca recheada: street-style tapioca filled with cheese, coconut, or local fruits.
- Tiquira: a strong local spirit made from cassava — approach with caution!
- Guaraná Jesus: this bright pink soda is sweet, spiced, and a true São Luís icon.
Food is such a big part of the culture here that you’ll find many of these flavors at local markets, especially Casa das Tulhas downtown.
Fun fact: Locals say that Guaraná Jesus is “mais doce que o pecado“, sweeter than sin!
