How to Use the Preposition EM with Indefinite Articles

You know that we use the preposition em to talk about location, places and time. We can create contractions with this preposition using definite articles and indefinite articles as well. When we talk in real life, we use these contractions a lot. And today, you’ll learn how to use the preposition em with indefinite articles in Portuguese (UM, UMA, UNS, UMAS). Indefinite articles in Portuguese. In Portuguese there are four indefinite articles. The indefinite articles in the singular form are: Um and Uma. The indefinite articles in the plural form are: Uns and Umas. A table with the indefinite articles divided into singular, plural, masculine and feminine.

Contractions of the Preposition EM with Indefinite Articles

We use these contractions when we want to talk about places, time or location for things that are not specific. For example, if I want to say that I’m on a specific beach – Copacabana beach – I’ll say: Eu estou na praia de Copacabana. Notice that na is the preposition em + the definite article a.

But if i want to say that I’m on a beach that I don’t know the name or location, I would say: Eu estou numa praia no Rio. Here I used the preposition em + the indefinite article uma, because I can’t specify the name of the beach.

The keys are in some drawers.

C'est vraiment fantastique...RioAndLearn. Les cours de portugais...ça vaut vraiment la peine. Les cours ont lieu du lundi au vendredi, (de 9h à 13h) et en après midi, ce sont des activités libres en groupe. (Soccer de plage, volleyball , excursions, visites des lieux touristiques, etc) Vendredi soir, on est allé à Lapa, un quartier nocturne de Rio. C'est quelque chose à voir! Des rues bondées de monde, des orchestres, des discothèques...Allô les décibels! L'apprentissage du portugais se fait en immersion, aussi bien en salle de classe que dans les activités extérieures organisées par Rio&Learn.
