In our Dica today, we are going to learn about the Portuguese Imperative.

The imperative form is used to express ideas such as: orders, suggestions, warnings, prohibitions, and even to ask for favors.

See below for the imperative conjugation of regular verbs in Portuguese:

Portuguese Imperative Conjugation of Regular Verbs

Imperative of the Irregular verbs. Conjugation of the Imperative: Cante, Cante, Cantemos, Cantem, Cantem. Beba, Beba, Bebamos, Bebam, Bebam. Abra, Abra, Abramos, Abram, Abram.

As you can see, there isn’t a first person conjugation for the imperative. Here are some examples using the imperative in Portuguese:


José, me ligue à noite.
José, call me at night.

Você está doente? Tome um remédio.
Are you sick? Take some medicine.

Portuguese Imperative of Irregular Verbs

Go to Copacabana beach! You’ll love it.

Tenha um bom dia!
Have a nice day!

Informal Imperative in Portuguese

So far, we’ve looked at the formal imperative conjugation of Portuguese verbs. However, in general, Brazilians use the informal imperative to express their ideas. In this case, we just need to use the third person singular of the simple present. Take a look:

C'est vraiment fantastique...RioAndLearn. Les cours de portugais...ça vaut vraiment la peine. Les cours ont lieu du lundi au vendredi, (de 9h à 13h) et en après midi, ce sont des activités libres en groupe. (Soccer de plage, volleyball , excursions, visites des lieux touristiques, etc) Vendredi soir, on est allé à Lapa, un quartier nocturne de Rio. C'est quelque chose à voir! Des rues bondées de monde, des orchestres, des discothèques...Allô les décibels! L'apprentissage du portugais se fait en immersion, aussi bien en salle de classe que dans les activités extérieures organisées par Rio&Learn.
